In Memory of

Stephen William Jewers

November 19, 1953- January 22, 2007

As you can all see I have made some changes to my web site. This project is to honour my brother Stephen who worked for 30 plus years in researching the family tree. He got me started many years ago and I will find someone to continue with the project.

If you have ever met my brother Steve, you would know about his sense of humour. It shows up in a recording he had on his telephone voice mail, which I had copied for all to hear. Click on Steve's name below to hear his voice. And check out a picture of Steve before he was sick.

THE JEWERS AND CORMIER FAMILY TREE PROJECT

Origin Displayed: Scottish

An ancient Scottish people known as the Picts were the forefathers of the Jewers family. Jewers is a name for a pilgrim from the Gaelic word deoradh. The deoradh kept the relics of saints. The family have been the hereditary custodians of St. Fillan's Crozier.

Spelling variations include: Dewar, Dure, Dewyer, Dewer, McIndeor, McJarrow and many more.

First found in Perthshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: William and his wife Jane Dewar and two children settled in Antigua in 1774; John Dewar arrived in New York in 1823; Steven Dewer arrived in Antigua in 1679.

Motto Translated: What would not one do for his country.

My name is Paul L Jewers and this is the Jewers and Cormier Family Tree Project Home Page. The Wellwood family in Nova Scotia is about 90% complete but I'm still finding and entering Jewers family members to the project. With the help of many family members, we are going to start a UK site. This is where Jewers Family came from, as far as we know so far. We are at a snag, we are trying to find records for John and Mary Jewers of Nova Scotia. I think John may have come from the USA. There is a marriage record of a John Jewers (born around 1720's in Philadelphia) and a Margaret Cook in 1745 in Philadelphia, Pa. John and Margaret may have moved to another State, where as son John (1750's) could have been in the 1770 war and ended up in Nova Scotia in 1778-79. Any help with finding these records would be helpful. Any Uk records that you have on the Jewers family, please send a copy to me at pjewers@istar.ca Thank You

TWO UPDATES: 1. John Jewers (seamen) and Margaret Cook that were married in 1745 in Philadelphia after Margaret's first husband (Mr Cook) was reported dead. Well, Mr Cook did not die and the marriage between John Jewers and Margaret was at an end. I will post the message at a later date.

2. New LDS records from England were posted and these records show John and Mary Jewers (Nova Scotia) lived in England and moved to Nova Scotia. The new records posted on the LDS web site show that thier children, other then James were born in England. I will update my tree soon.

News Flash: The first instalement of the Stephen William Jewers collection is being uploaded. My brother Stephen has been researching the family tree for about 30 years. Most of his info came from records from the archivies, personal interviews with family members. His info has confirmed most of the info that I found or recieved from other family members. Alot of the info is new to me and alot of new connections have been made. I do have more paperwork to look at, so there will be more uploads in the future. Once I have finished with his info, I will ship his info to the Nova Scotia Archives for all to see.

My Cormier family tree just went from 4 generations to 14 generations with the help of two wonderful people: Lucie M Consentino by giving me the key info that I was looking for, my Great Great Great Grandparents names and Stephen A White, Genealogist, Center for Acadian Studies at Moncton University, Moncton, New Brunswick with his hard work. If you have French Canadian family, then you should contact them to help you with your research. I just happened to find Cousin Lucie's web site and she handed me the KEY to a goldmine of information.

Check out Lucie's web site and the web site with Stephen White's work.

The List is finished. There are 11 pages total and I hope it helps you in your research. I will add more to this section as I find sites. As soon as I find more to see, it will be added here.

The City of Halifax Web Site

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has web page on the Halifax Explosion. Take a look around while you are there, I did and found it a great site to visit. If you have a interest in Ships and Shipping go to the RESEARCH link and you will find more links to other web sites. They do not have passenger lists or genealogical materials.
If you ever find yourself in Halifax. do drop in at the Museum, you can spend a day there and you will enjoy your time there, I know I did.

Jewers Family In England

Here is a new project, gathering of English family records. I have been incontact with some family members who are interested in the UK side of the family. We have set up a web site for the UK and records have been in the research mode for sometime now with family members in England. If you have information that can help in our research please contact us.

The UK web site: UK Web Site

We will be adding Gedcom files on these English family members, with histories and I hope pictures. One English member has already said that the pictures that I have posted look like family members over there. I have compared Danny in New Brunswick with my older brother Steve and John Mozat in the US said the same with Danny and his brother, interesting at lest. So, help us make this project as interesting as possible with helping with finding these records, Gedcom files and home page sites of other family members. Thank You
